here is a question for you. Does anyone know about or have experience of children with insomnia?

my 6 year old seems to be developing insomnia which is of course a concern for me as i have had it since i was a tennager.

she doesn't seem stressed about anything or worried about anything and its not into the small hours but if she goes to bed at 7 or 8 pm she can quite often still be wide awake saying she can't fall alseep at 10pm / 11pm onwards.

if we put her to bed any later then she is tired in the mornings and all day plus i don't think it is a good idea for a child that young to be up too late on a school night.

its not every night and its not a major concern at the moment but it has become more frequent....

as far as i can remember i only started having trouble when i was a teenager and my brother is very simillar to me in that it is rare he even goes to bed before 12am he doesn't even bother trying and he has been like that since he was a teenager

just wondering if anyone has had a simillar experience with their kids or if their insomnia started at an early age....

Hey vincent I hope I can help When i was younger I'd say around 7 I started suffering from boughts of insomnia Nights when I couldnt sleep and go through the next day And it would happen every once and a while but then became more frequent  My insomnia didnt fully progess until i Was about 10 or 12  And those once in a while cases became everyday battles It is true children can begin to develop insomnia at a young age but as a parent it is truly hard to see the signs You dont know the difference between they dont wanna goto bed or they cant goto bed unless you know what to look for which it sounds to me like you do Good luck on your lil one vincent and bless your family

Hi Sid,

Thanks for that. I will be keeping a watchful eye on her although I don't want to label her an insomniac just yet lol.

Hopefully she will grow out of it but she is such a bright little spark I think her brain just doesn't stop.. Maybe I need to challenge her each day but I don't want her to think life is all work and no play.... when she can't sleep i let her read in bed and that seems to work eventually.

Regards

Vincent

Perhaps you can try getting her to exercise/play more to help tire her out before bedtime arrives. I know kids should be going to bed usually around 9pm but sometimes it can be hard to adjust. Heh, you can always try the good ol' warm milk + bed time story trick!

Hi Chris

Yeah she is really active anyway, none stop all day. The warm milk idea might be worth a trick we have not done that for awhile. We do try an give her a bed time story every night but maybe I need to think of something that we can revisit every night that is a bit longer the problem is when i start reading her a long story because I am tired I find it hard to keep my eyes open....lol maybe that's the cure for my insomnia...

Yea man Letting her read a book Or better yet get books on tape That always use to Knock me Out It might help because they will hear noise and there mind is focusing on the rhythm of the voice and usually Works I dont know try the warm milk and good luck man

Cheers guys, will give it all a try and hopefully it won't become and issue for her.

:-)

Quite a few kids have sleep disturbances at that age. I did and grew out of it, I only became a bit of an insomniac later on in life through other reasons. Try and tire her out more in the day....
